G-8, Suspended

According to the Associated Press, the G-8 summit has been suspended and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the G-8 summit will resume after the Russian-Ukrainian situation has been resolved.

The G-8 summit would have been held in Sochi, Russia, where the 2014 Winter Olympics was held. After Russian President Vladimir Putin signed legislation making Crimea and Sevastopol a part of Russia, the working relationship between Russia and the United States and its western allies spiraled downward.

On Tuesday, President Obama announced an emergency meeting, scheduled for next week, to determine Russia’s continuing relationship with the G-8.

The United States and its western allies warned Russia and Crimea about the consequences that would follow if Crimea joined Russia.

Reuters reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Putin that his recent actions are a violation of international law and the Crimean referendum is in violation of Ukraine’s constitution.

And Tony Blinken, deputy National Security Adviser, warned Crimea that any vote resulting in Crimea joining Russia will not be recognized by “most of the world.”

After Crimea voted on Sunday to join Russia, the United States and the European Union announced sanctions against Russia’s citizens and companies.

President Obama issued an Executive Order that allows the U.S. Treasury Department to sanction former Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych, Ukranian Choice leader Viktor Medvedchuk, and Crimea separatists leaders Sergey Aksyonov and Vladimir Konstantinov.

The European Union (EU) announced sanctions against 21 officials in Russia and Crimea. The EU also set a travel ban and froze the assets of individuals associated with the Russia-Ukraine situation.

In response to the U.S. and EU, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia will sanction U.S.’ senators, companies, and target other interests that directly impact the U.S.
